WHO? I was born in Madrid, but I currently live in Washington DC. I was first introduced to photography while watching classic movies as a teenager but I went on to pursue a career in international conflict. I fell in love with photography as an art form in 2010 but my journey with street photography started recently by accident. After a year of waiting for my security clearance for a state department job, I got restless. When a friend asked me to join him in a street photography workshop I didn’t hesitate. I have been hooked ever since.
Interviews
Alison McCauley in Conversation with Blake Andrews
Blake Andrews: Can you tell me a bit about your journey? Where are you from? What were your early artistic influences?
Alison McCauley: I was born in the UK to British parents but spent my life moving from country to country. My dad was a hydroelectric engineer. My earliest influences were painters: Rothko, Basquiat, Miro, Tàpies, among others. Then as I got into photography, it was Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank to start with, probably because they were the first I came across. I do still love RF’s work just as much though.
Interview with Sonia Goydenko
WHO? I moved to the United States from Ukraine in 1991 and grew up in the NY/NJ area. After I finished studying Social Psychology and Russian Literature in college, my stepfather bought me a Nikon point and shoot camera. The first photo I took on it was a portrait of him. I remember looking at it and realizing that I had captured an essence of him that I had never before seen photographed.
