WHO?
Hi, my name is Chris Nesseth, I am a photographer from Portland, Oregon. I love walking for hours around town or spending days at an event searching for strange and colorful moments in ordinary settings. I’m addicted to flash and taking things out of context.
WHAT?
I am drawn to people. I want to find someone doing something out of the ordinary in an ordinary setting. I am drawn to obsession, when people are doing something they love more than anything, especially when that thing may not be well known to others.
WHERE?
Mostly downtown Portland, Oregon. I like to walk the same areas over and over. I believe that repetition can make things come to the surface that wouldn’t otherwise. When everything becomes familiar it can be easier to spot what is new and interesting.
WHEN?
All the time, I always have a camera on me.
WHY?
I never picked up a camera to find some bigger meaning or to create images that will change how people think. I am showing what I see and showing myself. I go out with the intention to just observe and I like showing the moments that people avoid. You know when you walk by someone or a situation and you look out of the corner of your eye and quickly look away? Maybe that person had face tattoos, an outfit you aren’t used to or showing a strong outward emotion. Sometimes we are afraid of that interaction, its unfamiliar or uncomfortable. I want to show those moments, so people have a chance to see for themselves. It is not as intimidating as you think. I have learned be more open through this practice and I hope my photos can bring that to others.
