WHO?
I am a retired photojournalist living in Helsinki. I worked for almost 40 years as a reporter, photo editor and photographer for the Helsinki newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
Besides my daily work, I have always worked on my own personal projects. Sometimes work assignments expanded into a personal project, sometimes my own work ended up in the newspaper.
WHAT?
My personal work deals mostly with documenting everyday life. The boring, mundane, invisible middle class way of life is my turf. Making an interesting image, preferably with humor, of almost nothing, is the greatest challenge.
WHERE?
My life as a photojournalist took me all over the world. My personal work is done mostly close to home. Close to where I live and close to the people I know and the way of life I know–and lead myself.
WHEN?
Random shots whenever I imagine I see something of importance. When working on a project I try to be more organized.
WHY?
It is important to document the everyday, the normal. For me it is writing visual history. It is not always visually stunning and it is seldom dramatic, but it is always with us.
Besides, I don’t have any other skills.
