WHO?
I am from Belgium, born and raised near Bruges. After my studies in Ghent, I moved to London. After about three years there I decided to travel, which I did (on and off) for about eight years. This nomadic life started in the mid 1970s, with various trips to India and South East Asia. In the mid 1980s, I spent over two years traveling through North and South America. I had the opportunity to work in Brazil for a short while and spent 6six months in that beautiful country. Once back in Belgium I decided to settle down in Brussels, where I have now been living for the last 35 years.
During all my travels, I photographed a quite a bit but that was mainly travel photography.
Beginning in the 2000s, I picked up photography again and started to take classes. Later I joined workshops abroad, more precisely with Nikos Economopoulos and Maciej Dakowicz. That’s when I got interested in street photography.
WHAT?
I am attracted to the unknown, the foreign and am very much interested in the traditions and the way of life of different cultures. When I am out in the streets, I usually don’t have a particular plan, I look for interesting scenes, people, situations, action etc. In general, I prefer simple or quiet scenes to overly busy ones.
I am fascinated by the city, its people and its dynamics. In the chaos of the streets, I look for those little moments of everyday life that move me.
WHEN?
As I travel a lot to exotic destinations, I have to be careful with the light. Early morning or late afternoon are of course the best times. Besides shooting outside in the streets I also shoot inside homes if I am invited in. It gives me an opportunity to make more intimate images. I also love night photography but that is a bit more difficult for me to master.
WHERE?
I photograph mainly when I travel. When abroad I focus on photography and devote all my time to roaming the streets for hours, looking for scenes, people, colors, shapes, shadows, action or interesting situations.
I photograph less back home.
WHY?
For me it a way to observe the world and to interact with people. Through my photography I would like to tell something about how people live, love, believe, celebrate, work, play, enjoy, suffer or survive.
