WHO?
I’m a teacher and photographer living in Perth, Australia. I am originally from Melbourne but have spent a lot of my life living in different places overseas – I think trying to understand the places I was living in was what prompted me to start exploring street photography.
WHAT?
Everything is a potential photograph. I am particularly attracted to parades and anything that involves a costume. I also find that large public events are great to photograph as people expect there to be photographers and they tend to let their guard down. I’m also attracted to exploring the tension between light and shadow – we have the most extraordinary intense light here in Western Australia which can be a joy to capture, although it presents its own challenges.
WHERE?
I love exploring Perth’s beaches and our long, and very hot, summer.
A few years of travel restrictions over the pandemic taught me to appreciate the familiar and to photograph my own neighbourhood more than I would have before. I have recently started traveling again and both Bali and India will always be special places to me.
WHEN?
Whenever I can make the space and time. It’s a form of relaxation for me. I am more inclined to get out and photograph when the sun is shining though.
WHY?
It’s a way for me to find order and calm amongst all the chaos and noise. Plus, there’s a thrill with candid street photography of capturing a moment, a movement, a gesture or a play of light and shadow that can never be completely replicated.
