WHO?
Hello, my name is Enrico Markus Essl and I was born in Linz, Austria. I grew up in Salzburg and I currently I live and work in Linz. I am a self-taught photographer; I have been photographing since my youth, and enjoyed photography as an elective subject in school. My first camera was a Russian Zenit SLR which I bought at the age of 12 with my pocket money.
WHAT?
Everything that comes in front of my lens. I do not work conceptually when I take pictures. Only after some time has passed do I arrange and sort my work, then some things grow together. Series and essays emerge and the conception happens at that point.
My focus is on geometry, colors and framing. People often take only a static role in my work and serve the image structure.
WHEN?
Actually, whenever I am on the road! I go a lot of ways on foot and then always have the camera with me. I do a lot of city trips and excursions and so I always have the opportunity to take some pictures.
WHERE?
I love photographing in Vienna and Berlin. Many of my photographs and also my last book were created in Berlin.
New places are especially inspiring, making you want more—and it is of course more exciting. But I have also photographed in the theater where I work, and even then try to implement my style of street photography with a 35mm lens.
WHY?
Because I want to create something lasting. I have loved photography since I was a child, particularly through the inspiration of Helmut Newton.
